What to do if your 4th generation iPod gives you a sad face

If you've already followed the sad-face instructions at Apple support, then maybe you should just shake it. Really, it worked for me.

[This may not work for video, photo, shuffle, and the earliest iPods]

This is so phenomenally ridiculous. Spend oodles on a gadget (or receive said oodle-costing gadget from your father-in-law as a gift, as in this case) and then a few years later when it halts, goes blank, quits upping, appears to have kicked the technological bucket, for no particular reason, just cock your wrist and give it a good vibrato jiggle and it will spin right up. Amazing.

We just think we have to solve high-tech gadgets high-techily. A good ol' kick will do it everytime!

This worked on mine too. However, I didn't do it myself but a British Jew who went to Harvard. Not a lie.
